Con men sell low-quality CFL bulbs

Beware of con men who may come knocking on your door in the guise of Bescom staff and try to sell you CFL bulbs.


Recently, an elderly woman from Indiranagar lost Rs 2,400 to these frauds.

The culprits, posing as Bescom staff, sold her 24 CFL bulbs for Rs 100 each. The woman’s daughter-in-law,"I tell people it's not about what I want lightbright , it's about what the people want," she said. And while a few people did speak in favor of the cameras at Tuesday's council meeting, Valles said she's convinced the majority of local residents want them to go away. Sneha, who lives near BDA complex, told Express the culprits came to the house when the elderly lady was alone at home.

“They even spoke to my husband over the phone and they were so convincing that she ended up buying 24 CFLs,” she said.

Sneha said the men told her mother-in-law that each bulb would cost Rs 100 now but Bescom would give them huge rebate later, which would be proportional to the number of bulbs bought.

When her mother-in-law asked for the receipt, the con men pointed to their colleagues standing near a neighbouring house and said they would give them the acknowledgement.

In March, the State government launched Belaku project under the Centre’s Bachat Lamp Yojana developed by Bureau of Energy Efficiency to promote efficient lighting. Under this scheme, the State would give four CFL bulbs for Rs 15 each to every household in exchange of incandescent bulbs.
