Citizen today boasts a litany of world firsts

Citizen today boasts a litany of world firsts

There is indeed much to be said about heading the Southeast Asian division of a company that has persistently been at the forefront of global watch technology.

Citizen today boasts a litany of world firsts which include the thinnest men's watch, the smallest ladies' watch, the Titanium watch and the Quartz watch.

It was also hailed as a trend-setter in Japan where it introduced the country's first shock-resistant watch, waterproof watch and wristwatch with an alarm setting mechanism.

As the 70s drew to a close, Citizen decided it was time to wear the social responsibility hat. The result was its Eco-Drive range which features environmentally-friendly watches that use any light as a power source.

The technology has made it unnecessary to change or dispose of batteries as the watch is able to store enough energy to last it six months in total darknesss.

“Citizen actually introduced this range 75 years ago but back then people were not concerned about the environment,” Tadahiro said. “All they talked about was its awkward bulky size.”

The company spent a great amount of time and effort explaining the Eco-Drive concept to the public when it was relaunched and it has paid off handsomely. Today the range contributes to more than 80% of sales.

“Buying an Eco-Drive watch makes the wearer feel that he or she is doing their bit for the environment,” Tadahiro smiled.

Is ballet suddenly

Trend Watch: Is ballet suddenly the new 'Twilight'?

Okay, I know, I know. But bear with me here: Both surround beautiful things that can cause bodily harm (Twilight: vampires; ballet: pointe shoes), both involve glitter (Twilight: sparkly vampires!; ballet: sparkly costumes!), both involve forbidden love (Twilight: between vampires and humans; ballet: between ballerinas and Hostess products), and both are women handbags enjoying their moment in the spotlight. That’s right: Ballet is so hot right now. Or, I should say, the dark underbelly of the ballet world is so hot right now.

Let’s run it down: For months now, chatter has surrounded Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, a ballet thriller about the art form’s dangerously competitive nature that has ignited Oscar talk for star Natalie Portman. Then a pack of black leotard-clad ballerinas toasted the a-hole that is Kanye West in his “Runaway” video. Furthermore, New York City Ballet principal Jenifer Ringer made headlines yesterday after The New York Times‘ Alastair Macaulay said the dancer “looked as if she’d eaten one sugar plum too many” in his review of the company’s Nutcracker. (Dude, as a writer, I love me my puns, but that was way harsh, Tai.) And finally, news broke today that Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, and Bailee Madison have joined Kristen Bell in Dance of the Mirlitons, a film about a curvy ballerina with a stage mom (Bell) who attempts to make it in the tough business. (Co-director Daniel Dubiecki’s rep Seamless Tube confirms The Hollywood Reporter‘s report with EW; Madison will play the ballerina, Moretz will play the class’ ace pupil, and Haley will play a sadistic Russian ballet teacher in the film, which will also be helmed by Evan Greenberg.)

And yet, I’m conflicted about ballet’s trendy, dark turn in pop-culture: I love the romantic mood surrounding dance films like The Turning Pointe, and I love Center Stage‘s silly spin on the art (though, admittedly, even that frivolous film addressed eating disorders). But as a former ballerina, I’m also all too aware of the pain and suffering attached to dance. I’m happy to see it represented for what it is: A fairly painful art form that involves plenty of blood and gumption. (Not to say that Black Swan is 100 percent realistic or that youngsters should flock to the theaters to see the very R-rated film.) It’s important that the young folk realize the dangers of dance before becoming seduced by the glitter and glitz. (See? Like Bella!)

What about you, PopWatchers? Do you like Led lamp your ballet dark, or with plenty of cream and sugar(plums)?

Midlands woman raises money to buy bulletproof

Bulletproof vests are standard equipment at most law enforcement agencies. Usually every officer has his or her own, but that doesn't include the crime fighters on four legs. Now a midlands woman is trying to change that.

He's put in harm's way early and led lighting often. "He's the point man for us," said Brian Hinz. "He's letting us know where this person went, or where this person is."

"He" is Bayka, and he's a deputy. "He watches my back a lot," said Hinz. "I give him credit for my life every once in a while.

Hinz has called the dog his partner for four years. Together, they've tracked missing kids and elderly adults. Sometimes they go after violent criminals with Bayka out front. "They're up close women handbags and personal if not already making contact with that person, so it makes it a lot easier for the suspect to harm the dog," said Hinz.

Volunteer Elaine Henderson hopes to prevent that. "I asked about the protection of the dogs and the officer explained they rely on the vests but only when they're available because they're not provided by state or county funds," said Henderson.

She's started the Heroes Vest Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money for K-9 sized bulletproof vests. Each one is custom made, and costs a little over $2,000. They're also stab and slash proof.

Henderson is selling calendars featuring Lexington County's K-9 team to raise money. She's also accepting donations, and Led lamp hopes to be able to buy about 5 to 10 vests each year.

"Knowing when a dog is about to be put in that situation it's nice to have that extra piece of equipment to protect him," said Hinz.

Camilletti recognized

Camilletti recognized

Sandy Camilletti came away from her first Western Slope League postseason meeting happy with the results. She just wished she could have had more of her players recognized.

“We didn’t have a lot of spots because of where we finished,” the MCHS volleyball coach said. “But, I think Led lamp coaches recognized who earned it.”

By finishing 3-9 and in a tie for seventh in the league with Battle Mountain, the Bulldogs were allowed one first-team award and one honorable-mention award.

Senior Lauren Roberts was a first-team selection, and junior Melissa Camilletti was honorable mention.

“There were times this season when teams couldn’t stop Lauren,” coach Camilletti said. “When she was on, coaches would remember her.”

Roberts led the team in kills (135 in WSL play) and was second in digs (147 in WSL play).

Sandy complimented Roberts on her defensive improvement.

“I didn’t coach her last year, but I would come and watch,” she said. “Her defense was what I saw her best improvements.”

Melissa credited Roberts with being “an awesome hitter.”

Roberts returned the compliment when she said, “Melissa can make the perfect set from anywhere on the court.”

Sandy said that although Melissa didn’t get all of the accolades as a setter, she was key for the Bulldogs.

“When somebody watches volleyball, they don’t go home and say, ‘Wow the setter really had some nice sets tonight,’” she said. “But, people who know volleyball know that Melissa did a women handbags great job for us. Her position is like the quarterback of the team and a lot goes through her.”

Melissa said she improved her consistency from her sophomore year to junior year.

Sandy wasn’t named coach until late in the summer, and didn’t have a chance to take the team to a camp or work with ed hardy jeans them in the spring.

She said this year she will have that chance, and looks forward to putting in the work.

State lays out roadside art rules

State lays out roadside art rules

When Chapel Hill officials floated the idea last year of a big "gateway sculpture" for the median of U.S. 15-501 at the edge of town, they got a quick answer from the state Department of Transportation.
After all, DOT engineers had enough on their hands without risking the physical and political hazards of public energy saving light art.

What if it fell over and hurt somebody? What if it were so attractive that it made drivers stop and stare - or so ugly that it just made them mad?

Raleigh artist Thomas Sayre, commissioned to design a signature piece for Chapel Hill, helped transportation officials adopt a broader view about public art without compromising their concern for public safety.

A few senior DOT officials nodded in agreement when Sayre talked up the appeal of roadside art at a Raleigh conference in January. Meanwhile, DOT was fielding proposals from Winston-Salem to integrate art into the design of several new freeway bridges, and from Charlotte to add artistic lighting to an uptown bridge.

"They all converged on DOT at the same time, with a relatively new DOT secretary [Gene Conti] who said, 'We need to respond, rather than say no to everything,'" Sayre said.

Now, after working for the past few women handbags months with Sayre and a committee of arts boosters, the DOT has developed a nine-page policy for saying yes.

The state Board of Transportation is expected to approve the new guidelines next month for towns and other agencies that want to sponsor works of art on the public right of way controlled by DOT. Along with free-standing work on road shoulders and median strips, it covers art that could be integrated into the construction of bridges, bus shelters, walls and other transportation structures.

"It's a philosophical sea change for DOT just to begin to consider that art has a place in the transportation system," said Jeffrey York, Chapel Hill's public art administrator.

"Many communities across the country have done this successfully," Sayre said. He's known for building 24-foot-tall concrete rings along a greenway at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh, and has also created pieces at airports and alongside tracks and highways in other cities.

Don Lee, who heads DOT's roadside environmental unit, told transportation board members last week that the state would not take on the financial or creative responsibility for roadside art.

The local government sponsor would be required to design the art, certify that it is acceptable to the community and safe for drivers and pedestrians, and cover all construction and maintenance costs.

DOT reserves the right to remove artwork that poses a hazard or becomes an eyesore.

"Certainly the department doesn't want Led lamp to get into determining what's art and what's not art," said Ralph Womble, a Winston-Salem arts patron and Board of Transportation member. "It's the people in the community deciding on some type of art, and state property being utilized in that way."

The pairing of Nucky and Margaret

The pairing of Nucky and Margaret

The pairing of Nucky and Margaret also began to pay off this episode with a couple of scenes that showed them working together. With Eli shot, Nucky telephones her. He tells her to move her Led lamp two children to the Ritz and find his business ledger and stash it. “Until I return I prefer to rely only on you,” he says. The gang’s core is set: Nucky, Jimmy, Harrow, and Margaret. It’s team Nucky.

The subplot involving Van Alden and his wife, who has not been able to conceive a child, was a nice fit for an episode that also concerned itself with Harding’s illegitimate baby and Angela’s difficulties providing for her son with Jimmy. Tempted to give the money he has intercepted to his own wife for a fertility operation, Van Alden ends up, instead, mailing it off to its rightful recipient, Angela, before sending Rose a scolding letter gussied up with scripture.

The episode lost a chance at some suspense, I thought, when it cut quickly to Margaret’s removing the ledger from women handbags Nucky’s drawer. As far as I recall, she and the children weren’t shown leaving their new home for the hotel. Her departure from the townhouse and entry into Nucky’s business lair could have been a lot more tense for the viewer, maybe with the appearance of a servant or some random petitioner. Not a huge deal, though.

Margaret takes Nucky’s ledger from the drawer, only to be interrupted by a phone call from a heavy breather. Probably Van Alden. Among other things, this episode has been an examination of the advantages and ills of home telephony. Margaret goes on to open the notebook, which Nucky has specifically asked her not to read. The skillful filming of its pages—with the careful, handwritten lists that record Nucky’s bootlegging business—makes efficiently clear that Margaret’s former alliance with the temperance energy saving light movement was nothing but a dalliance. Here real metier is here, with this ledger and these numbers. Much more than the up-against-the-wall scene with Nucky and Margaret a few episodes back, this quiet moment gives us an intimate view of a couple in the making.
